Lumen Christi Launch - October 2009

Lumen Christi Launch - October 2009

The launch of Lumen Christi took place on Saturday 31 October 2009. The recent published volume is a sumptuous publication on the stained glass window of Mount Saint Joseph. The launch took place to coincide with the annual Roscrea Autumn Conference, and received tremendous support at the gathering in the Abbey Church.

Local historian George Cunningham acted as MC for the afternoon. Attendees heard words from the author, Dom Laurence Walsh, and from the newly elected Abbot of Mount Saint Joseph, Dom Richard Purcell, who produced the publication. Nicola Gordon Bowe wrote the foreword for the book, and at the launch she spoke about stained glass in Ireland and the significance of this book in recording the history of this medium.

In attendance at the launch was Connie Scanlon, the designer who brought Dom Laurence's text to life through her wonderful layout and design. The book's photographers James Fraher and Sean Curtin were also present for the proud unveiling of their superb work.

Roscrea local, Councillor Noel Burke, Cathaoirleach of Offaly County Council, expressed his pleasure in having this publication document the importance of the monastery's stained glass windows. Offaly County Council was delighted to give financial support for the refurbishment of windows over recent years.

Music for the occasion was provided by Schola Hyberniae, an all female ensemble, directed by Giovanna Feeley. The singers added to the jubilant air present on the day. The tireless endeavours of all those involved in bringing this publication to fruition were justly praised on this wonderful autumn afternoon.
