college

The Cistercian College at Mount Saint Joseph, Roscrea, is today the only fully-fledged secondary school in the world established by and still connected with the Cistercian monks of the Strict Observance (Trappists). It is one of only two secondary schools in Ireland linked to an Abbey where the monks live their lives of contemplation, work and prayer, in the spirit of the Rule of Saint Benedict.

The College was founded in 1905 by the monks, and was built on a scale that demonstrated their vision for the future of this educational establishment in Ireland.

The College aspires to be a Christian community of learning; a worshipping community with an awareness of the presence of God in daily life and in the preparation of a boy for adult life. It strives to bring alive the motto of the Abbey: Insideat coelis animo sed corpora terris, While conscious of earthly needs, we seek the things of Heaven.
